  Intensives

What is an Intensive?

Brief Intensive Outpatient Counseling (IOP) has been growing in recent years and is more widely used today as a preferred style of treatment for resolving personal and relational problems.

Who are they for?

IOP is not for everyone. At Wings of Grace we assess the specific needs of those seeking our help to determine if traditional styles of therapy or an IOP is better suited for their particular needs.

What is the purpose?

The purpose of an IOP is to go deep into core issues in a short period of time in order to bring resolution to areas that are blocking health and growth. You might call it “submarining.”

Should I consider an Intesive?

IOP’s are used when people and relationships are in crisis, but are not limited to only treating critical problems. They are best utilized when people are stuck, have tried other forms of counseling without much success, or want to concentrate on specific issues which need rapid and lasting change.

IOP’s are often used in treating such problems as; marital conflict, affairs, many addiction issues (sexual, gambling, food, fantasy, spiritual, and some substance abuse), trauma, abuse, and family of origin relationships. They are sometimes also used in preparing premarital couples and/or assessing relationship compatibility.

How long does an Intensive last?

The typical IOP lasts one to two weeks.

What is the format of an Intensive?

Normally, the format is three to four hours a day. While an IOP is heavily aimed at working alone with one or two therapists, group participation is sometimes employed as an adjunct to therapy. At WOG, because we have a wide variety of specialties, at various times several different therapists might be utilized to enhance to address unique situations.

There are also times when the intensive format is used in a group setting (such as a retreat) for individuals with similar issues, couples, and even families.

What does an Intensive require?

IOP’s require concentrated effort on the part of all participants. IOP’s are by their very nature demanding and rigorous (as well as rewarding). Therefore, IOP’s take considerable amounts of energy, and because of that, we have found that it is wisest to be free from all normal responsibilities such as work, home, and any other commitments that would distract from the focus of this experience. Also, whether local or out-of-area, we strongly believe it is necessary to stay in an alternate residence such as a motel or retreat center. We can provide you with many options to help meet that need.

How effective is an Intensive?

The results of an intensive can be quite remarkable. Whereas, traditional therapy can take weeks, months, and sometimes years, IOP’s can achieve significant results because of the concentrated effort. Also, IOP’s avoid the added stress of the “stop-and-go” nature of a traditional fifty minute session.

What is the cost of an Intensive?

Cost for an IOP will often vary. Each situation is different. We can give you a better idea after a telephone interview/intake has been conducted. Insurance sometimes will cover part of an IOP or all of it. Unfortunately, some insurance carriers will not cover any of the cost. Our office is ready to assist you in making that determination.

We would welcome the opportunity to explore this revolutionary form of assistance and are committed to finding the best solution and approach for your situation.
